High performance mufflers are not meant to lessen the noise of car engines, they are primarily to improve the sound and nowadays, the look of a muffler has also become a status symbol for car owners. A muffled engine sound creates that “growl”. The louder is the growl, the more pride it can give for you to show off that baby. But be careful because you don’t really want to get a ticket for noise pollution.
The improvement of mufflers through the yeas has been pretty cool. You can hear them called as “cherry bomb” or “hotdog” in the automotive world. The first uses a layer of glass for sound insulation while the latter is actually a mini muffler because of its relatively small size. What looks to be a simple piece of tube metal actually contains smaller tubes inside with holes on them. The way these tubes are positioned inside that metal is the reason for that enhanced sound, engineered to make it sound like a perfectly tuned musical instrument.
Mufflers maybe made from aluminized metal or stainless steel but high performance mufflers are usually made only in high grade stainless steel. They are good in resisting corrosion and can definitely add a sleeker look to your car.
